COVID-19 can Damage Eye Cells

A new study has raised concerns among the world over the ill effects of corona virus (Covid-19) worldwide. A team of American researchers has found direct evidence that the corona can also infect eye cells (cells). SARS-Cov-2 virus, a factor of Covid-19, is believed to spread to the respiratory tract and initiate infection. Keeping this in mind, it has been made mandatory for people to wear masks.

Researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital in the US found that eye cells could be directly infected with SARS-Cov-2. Originally aerosol transmission is considered the initial source of the outbreak. But the virus has been found in eye water. This suggests that the eye is also a delicate organ from which the virus can enter. The results of the study suggest that SARS-Cov-2 can infect eye surface cells. The presence of an enzyme called ACE2 receptor and TMPRSS2, including virus-associated proteins, has been found in infected cells. The corona enters the cells through this enzyme. Researcher Professor Timothy Blenkinsop said, 'We hope that this result of the study will be helpful in finding additional measures for eye protection. We also want to try these models in testing new ways to prevent eye infections. ' The study has been published in the journal Cell Stem Cells.
